I am Desiging a GUI for an ADSL modem and the modem has a firmware which asks for a prompt login which is written in html/php . GUI is being developed with VIsual C++ and socket programming is real hard to crack the prompt Login so using telnet i am able to login with just the password . there is a better feature in python to telnet in to the modem does anyone know how to run a python script in VC++ 6.0

Look at either having Boost.Python, or SWIG. If this is plain C code, look at the manual. *Read the manual* as it tells you what to do to embed Python in C programs.

I am a junior in college, and I am finding computer science boring because they don't really teach much about coding. I know C++ , but not how to make GUI's or use Microsoft Visual Studio, but I understand programming. How long to classes offered by trade schools to get a MCAD usually last? How much do they cost? What is covered in the classes, is it mostly hands on coding? ( stuff that isn't boring) Would it be difficult for me to do this if I went to one of the programs? Also is it possible to get a good job just having a MCAD and some college or do most people that are MCAD's also have CS degrees? Thanks

This is slightly off topic, but I have a few certifications in Java, that I earned without any "real world coding" experience immediately after I graduated with my B.S. in computer science, and the tests weren't too difficult. After graduating I was only proficient in C++, I had no course work in Java.

Here are the Java certification test I took:

Sun Certified Java programmer -- Passed in 7-10 days with no prior Java experience

Sun Certified Business Component Developer -- 10 weeks immediately after the Programmer cert, again I had no "real-world" experience.

Sun Certified Web Component -- It took 10 weeks but I was working full time.

Sun Certified Java Developer -- Took 3 years, but mostly because I kept putting it off, but was really like 60-80 hours of coding and planning.

I didn't take any courses. I just self learned with some text books (linked in my sources). The test cost between $150-$200 US dollars each. Could I get a job with only my certs and without a degree...maybe, but both degree and certs help land interviews for jobs. I would definitely finish your degree and if you really want to write code, perhaps you could work part time or do some coding on the side. There are some people that work as full time programmers with no degree and no certs.

I think the MCAD %26amp;MCSD test are either in C# or VB.NET, so you would have to learn one.

It is always hard to land a first job, contact everyone you know to ask if the hear of any opening to let you know.

Also have someone else review your resume. If it is written like this post you won't get interviews for simple things like no space after commas and using the word aint with out even an apostrophe. A poorly written resume means you didn't care about quality, nobody wants a programmer who doesn't care about quality.
Reply:Try an employment agency that specifically specializes in IT placements. Take any position they place you at. After you have completed the assignment, get choosy.
Reply:It may be your interview skills.

It may be there is too much competition in your area for the same type job.

A degree doesn't get a job, a degree and experience usually account for more.

So, really practice and brush up on looking good, appearing competent and eager and buy a book on tough interview questions and see if you are failing any.

Call one of the companies back and ask if they could give you feedback on why you didn't get the job. Tell them you are wanting to learn from the experience.

Look beyond your comfort zone; are you trying for 1 type of job, or any that fit a certain criteria? expand your horizons a bit.

And, finally, it may be that there are too many of you there. Look for jobs with the government (e.g. jobsusa) with the military (as a civilian) too.

And maybe a different area might help.
Reply:Think about it, if YOU were an IT employer with a position to fill, and you had two equally qualified applicants, who would you give the job to? You? Or the equally qualified person with some job experience?

Go take ANY job for 6 months, and excel at it. Then try again...

Reply:If you are good at it, go into consulting. Many companies pay top dollar for consultants who can get the job done fast without having to hire a ft employee. I did consulting before I landing an ft job. It paid the bills and kept up my chops.

I got told that there is no GUI PROGRAMMING (Graphical User Interferce) in C++. Can anyone tell me a programming a programming language that can create windows without tiles and ICONS (icons on desktop). If C can do it, can you please tell me a course of C with the GUI PROGRAMMING?

That's garbage. Most GUI programming os done in C++, and you can do it in C as well. Learnabout the Qt toolkit from Trolltech and you should be OK.

Reply:Step 1: Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus program. If you don't, install AVG. You should only have one antivirus program. (If you need to uninstall your antivirus, use RevoUninstaller)

Step 2: Visit the Google Pack website, and use it to download Spyware Doctor.

I also noticed that you're running an outdated version of Internet Explorer. I would suggest that you visit the Microsoft Update website, click on the Custom button, and download all the available updates, including IE7. The scans that the IE installer does may help make this process easier.
Reply:Everyone is correct. However, cleaning a virus is sometimes very hard. If you manage to erradicate the virus from your machine I suggest to install a technology to wipe out any infection at boot time.

Deep Freeze and ReturnIL are two softwares that protect your computer from trojans, malwares, etc.

You computer will still get infected by viruses and other trojans when you browse to P2P sites or others. However, as soon as you reboot your PC it will revert to its original locked state wiping out all the changes made to the OS, so you will have a clean PC every time you boot.

Now I don't have antivirus software on my machine. I still have Firewall to make sure I can block inbound/outbound traffic while infected (to be able to detect the anomalies so I can reboot and clean the pc and to protect from any file transfer of confidential info stored in my pc).

Also, if you don't get Deep Freeze or Returnil you can get Sandboxie to create a virtual sandbox in Internet Explorer that isolate your computer from your bad browsing habits. However, this does not protects you from software installs that you download, that would be the job of Deep Freeze or Returnil

I looked over this log and it appears to be a pretty much standard and nothing suspicious. Though I would tell you if you are going to run Java at least download script block for your Firefox browser. That and McAffe anti virus SUCKS. Try Avast Anti-virus. It's free and does a MUCH better job at blocking, detecting viruses and spyware.

You aren't EVER going to remove NT_Kernel. It's the core of Windows XP. The Kernel contains all the vital instructions and programming that allows your computer to be something more than an expensive paperweight. Windows will NOT allow you to delete it short of formatting the HDD. You can however change your windows update options from the control panel to not update or notify you when updates are available but not download them and auto install.

I'm working with graphic user interface (GUI) that prompt the user to choose a command. This command (data) will be send a set of data to the USB port which is conected with bluetooth dongle. I have finished creating the GUI. My problem is, how to send the data to the USB port so that it can be transmitted using the bluetooth dongle?! Please help..

With pointers only the device interface are created.

Hi all,

The computer I am writing from is a working ambulance dispatch computer. The latest problem is the links from search enjines being redirected to webcry, and another site not affiliated with the search result link desired.

This is causing issues with the bosses thinking employees are cruising porno on the job. I am a supervisor and keep telling them that this is not nessesarilly the case as it does it automaticly, and my poor crews cant use a good tool for fear of a write up.

I am ok wit the computer and I have got AVG and Panda running the problem is restarting the computer as it is a busy machine and is needed to dispatch and track ambulance units and the log in process for this is sometimes too long. I have run hijack this and will post the log below, but I am gonna need as minimal reboots as possible.

Reply:I've seen this behaviour from Trojan DNSChanger. This trojan changes your DNS settings, where it points to new IP address. So, whenever you search from google, it return porn and related affiliates as well as malware related links.

I advise you to disconnect from the internet and check your DNS and scan your machine.

look up fread and if u want, fwrite, theres plenty of functions for file input output but all i ever use is

fopen, fclose, fprintf, fread, and fwrite

the second parameter of fopen specifies the mode, the modes i am familiar with are r, w, a, ab, rb, and wb

whether or not the b is present specifies binary or not, if it is binary, special character conversions will not be performed, if not binary, it is text

r means read, w means write, a means append, basically self explanatory

in most cases hijack viruses/worms can be removed using antivirus such as Symantec Norton antivirus and anti-spyware such as Webroot Spyware.

I WOULD recommend AVG free anti-virus and anti-spyware but apparently you have it installed already and your system got hijacked, that's why free software is never that great. go grab the two software i told you, i guarantee those two paid software above will remove all bugs you have.

I am a beginner and know the basic things about binary, GUI programs and things like that. I have a high interest in getting to learn these languages via the computer but cannot find PDF file formats that teach this language efficently enough.

Any books you can reccommend?

Any sites? (assuming they are printable and can be stored on PDF?).

And how difficult is it to learn these? I want to be able to program games and databases that use these sort of languages that you can manipulate.

I am very eager to learn this I am only 15.

Is there any particular courses I can take? Can I get MD's Bsc's or PhD's in this in future? Can I join clubs? If so which ones?

Search the Internet for older books on the language you want or go to a library and check out a book.

Reply:OK first a little advise: don't learn by automating tasks from commercial IDE software like Visual C++, Netbean IDE, or whatever; using them as tools writing assignments or even later on for real job are just fine, but not as learning goes.

Luckily I know none for Python, anyway, books are better for the purpose you want to do. I do prefer O'Reilly's pocket references (yes, those) as introductory books, if there are such for the languages you mention all power to you.

Not online, I have not run into any sites as Sun Java or Microsoft MSDN. I did learn VB, C, C++, Perl, Java 1.0 from big books, PHP, JavaScript from an O'Reilly pocket reference books, JScript/ASP, C# on PDA, Python and Java frameworks from reading codes, and the above two sites while comprehensive enough to use as primary study resource I used them only as references.

No need to get too eager learner, not for years before you actually starts this.
Reply:Really, you are talking about BSc's and PhD's like they came out a lucky bag! you don't GET BSc's or PhD's. You spend years studying hard for them and even then you are strictly examined and many people fail to achieve the high standard.!

First. Get good grades at school. (especially maths)

Second. Enrol into a computer course at College or University.

Third. Three or four years later, you will know the answer to your question.

Your enthusiasm is good. But instant gratification is not going to happen here. You will have to do some work on your own initiative before you see any results whatsoever.

This is an interesting problem. So you have 30 seconds to check all the different combinations of 10 words of some undisclosed length. Since it's an undisclosed length, they could supply an extremely long word which will lag your algorithm down. Normally to find all the possible combinations of a word, you would use recursion, but this is very costly in this case. You can probably use a trie to speed the algorithm up if need be.

However, I would suggest you look into a specific data structure which best suits to solve this problem. (A nice data structures book: http://cpp.datastructures.net/chapters/i... ).

CLI is Command Line Interface and is used by hard core programmers to work directly with the compiler.

The calculator should perform 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The calculator should contain a button called clear that will clear the last input of the formula (forexample, 3+4 then "button clear" deletes 4 only) and also the calculator should contain another button called C/A that will clear all the input. Hmm, sounds like a homework assignment...

The GUI is really straightforward. Use two JPanels, one to hold the buttons and one to contain the entire calculator. Use a GridLayout on the one with the buttons and a BorderLayout on the overall panel (so you can get the text box across the top.) If you really wanted to I guess you could do a GridBagLayout, but it's easier to combine the simpler ones. For the calculations, use two Stacks, one that holds doubles or floats to hold your numbers, and one that holds ints representing your operations. Define constants such as Calculator.ADD and Calculator.DIVIDE to store in the operator stack. When the user clicks a number button it will append that number to the number in the text field. When an operation button is clicked, add the number in the text field to the numerical stack. When equals is clicked, iterate through both stacks until you have a result. A better method would be to show the entire equation in the text window and wait until equals is pressed to evaluate to allow for complex equations. This would require you to code a standard-to-postscript evaluator, which is a bit above what you need to complete this project.

The best thing for you to do is to picture on paper or in your mind the actions that are required.

First you will need to type in a number. The number will be typed in one digit at a time and appear on the "display". You will be using the calculator keypad for this so each number will have to update the "display".

You will now press an operation key, but no operation will be performed at this stage in this example. (The final program may be different to this) but you will need to store the operation.

Now you enter another number. This second number will refresh the "display" but you will need to store the previous number because you have an operation to process.

Now you press any operation key or an equals operation and the previous operation will be performed. The result will be shown on the "display".

I think you will find that this is called a use case. A very important tool in the development of OO programs.

Or of course you could always just cobble something together and hope that it works.

If the themes are .msstyles files, they will only show in Display Properties if you patch your uxtheme.dll file. If they are not in the .msstyles format, you will need to install their software.

How do you make objects GUI's with programming languages?
You can use a package like Visual Studio, Delphi, JBuilder or IntelliJ to create Graphical User Interface programs for Windows.

They let you "draw" your Windows forms by dragging elements onto the form and then they guide you in completing the code.

VS supports C# and VB.net (and J#, but you'd be crazy to use that).

Delphi supports Delphi (Object Pascal).

JBuilder and IntelliJ support Java but cost money.

If you're interested in Java, Eclipse is definitely free but you have to write a lot of the code to create your GUI by hand...it's visual design tools aren't as good as the other programs.

Now if you really want to work in C or C++ there are some other tools out there. I find the easiest is Borland's C++ Builder.
Reply:Learn Visual C or Visual C++. They've already written all the code to create scroll boxes and buttons and dialog boxes, all the pieces needed for a GUI. Designing the interface is very drag-%26amp;-drop. You have all the GUI elements on a pallot and you drag them to a form and position and size them.

The you go on to write the code to tell the system what to do with thses buttons and boxes and so on.

Trolltech provides an application that has many examples and demos in it. I don't remember what it's called on Windows...on my Mac, it's qtdemo. This application may have come with your download but if not you can get it for free from Trolltech. There are some text editor examples available within the qtdemo application. I am working on software requirements for changes in a user interface (GUI) screen. I would like to find, if possible, a list that gives all the possible parameters for the various objects that will appear on the screen, such as text boxes, dialog boxes, etc. The program is coded in Visual C++ if it mattters.

Looking for a Web site with a list of Visual C++ screen object parameters.?
I have included a link to the MSDN pages which lists several of the on screen objects which control the elements of a GUI. From this screen you will see a list of class names. Click one and it gives you the overview, but towards the bottom you will see another link which reads "Class members". By clicking this, you will see all the methods (they call them operations) and attributes. Again, clicking one of these will tell you the functions signature which lists the parameters of the object.

I believe a straight list of object parameter names and types does not exist because it would be no good to any programmer. Programmers deal with the objects and will look up their signature as needed. That and parameter number and types can change with different signatures.

I'm a student and doing my final year project in my university. This assignment requires me to transmit data/signal from the computer (prompt by the user via Graphic User Interface, developed using visual C++) to the Bluetooth dongle at the USB port.

I've completed doing the GUI and I'm having problem to make the data/signal able to transmit to the Bluetooth dongle attached at the USB port.

I look forward for ideas and opinions in getting the right programming code or method to fulfill the task.

I have learned the basics of Visual Basic, and PHP(Html/CSS Included) and little of Mysql.

Usually when I try and learn C++, I give up way to early because I never get to do the things I want to do. Write GUI, Media Apps, etc... I plan on developing for Linux with KDE.

There are a lot of 'wires' in vc++, as well as new stuff, which i never learned in a C++ courses. These are like 'DYNCREATE', 'MESSAGEMAP', and many other weird identifiers! What are those means and how to build the GUI applications like in the VB? I've tried MFC appWizard but that's just a rough. What about importing and editing more complicated components like database objects in such a large-scale systems?

How to make activeX objects functioning? I've tried ones but it comes out nothing.

I'm good in C++ but, when i start working in VC++, I get confused.?
I personally think you should try Borland Builder C++, it's as intuitive as VB and as powerful as C++ too bad it's not as popular as VC (people think that just because microsoft wrote it it must be good)

I've used all of them but it's been too long and actually if I had a choice and I was in your shoes, I'd go for learning Visual Studio.net and C# because really that it's any better than C++ but unfortunatelly chances are that it will be much more in demand in the future.
Reply:Every OS provides a series of libraries that allow for the fine-grain control of a program's behavior. C++ is the nut-n-bolts layer of programming compared to VB's more drag-n-drop interface. Both are useful, and can even be used together.

Windows offers several libraries to allow you to control things at a detailed level, as does Linux and Apple.

What you are seeing in this C++ code is that C++ is just a syntax specification. The meat behind all the VB code is actually similar to this you're now working at a lower level. This gives two things: power and responsibility.

You can still write "start from a blank page" C++ code inside visual studio, at least for a command-line application. The settings of the compiler are a bit different, but one your learn that, you can write C++ just as if it were on a *nix-style text-based interface.

With C++ on any platform, you have the power to control you application exactly as you wish. You also have the responsibility to learn what these libraries are and how they're used.

There's too much to teach all of windows C++ (v6 or .net) here in yAnswers, but if you begin with a few books or reading in MSDN, you will slowly grasp it. Remember, the first book you read is NOT the definitive way to do things (although many books are sold with that premise). You must reference several sources to ensure you have a well-rounded viewpoint on how to write code in complex environments.

Overall, simply use the tutorials for simple applications, then read each line and look up each keyword, macro, variable or class you don't understand. PLAY with the code, read the header files, and follow several tutorials without skipping ahead. This tedious investment will give you a great base to start writing your own.

If you're just starting, try learning C# - it's almost identical syntax but hides many of the lower details again. You get almost the best of both worlds VB and C++.
Reply:If by being good in C++ you mean you only know (athough well) to make console programs, you will indeed get confused, because Windows apps are very different. If that's the case, I would try to find a good tutorial first. Also know that there is a difference between normal Winapi apps and MFC ones. If you want something VB style, learn to make MFC apps, they are more "visual".

BTW VC++ is, in my opinion, the best C++ IDE.

About the database component things, I don't know, last time I needed a database I simply used CDatabase MFC class to connect to it.

In line 3 you are declaring a variable "v" of type "core::vector3df".

In line5 you are trying to write the contents of "v" to myFile.

Here you are getting error.

This is because of the fact, that "%26lt;%26lt;" and "%26gt;%26gt;" overloaded operators are defined only for the built in types and not for the userdefined class objects..

But you are trying to use "%26lt;%26lt;" operator for an object of user defined class...In case you want to do this, first of all, you have to write code to overload the "%26lt;%26lt;" operator in your class definition.

Only then it will work...

According to the error statement, you might want to check if you have a file named test.txt in the same directory and what is in it.

The fourth line in your program starts with "ofstream". You have #include's for "fstream" and "ostream" and I'm thinking this may just be a typo.

Reply:Hokay, as far as Gomoku goes (note the spelling), you should be able to implement it with an array and with recursion, however I am not going to tell you about recursion or link you to a tutorial. I am going to link to the wikipedia article about it:

It may not be necessary and if you can implement your game without it, so much better. I did an owari game with recursion and I finally had to stop work because it took so much memory it crashed every computer I ran it on.

Why doesn't shell process from Visual C++ hide?

Hi all,

I'm writing a GUI for an old shell program which I don't want to dig into too much. I start the shell program and give it some input and read its output.

Simple enough.

But it doesn't want to hide although I've set it to "Hidden". The shell process also locks the gui program.

What to do about this?

The strange thing is if I add a breakpint after the process is started in Visual C++ 2003 (7.1) it does hide, as if some interuption is all that is needed...

Why doesn't shell process from Visual C++ hide?
it locks the GUI because you're using a single thread. Therefore the event message loop can't be processed, which initiates the re-drawing of the element and all mouse and keyboard elements.

To avoid that, you have to spawn your process in a separate thread.

I also don't think that you can "hide" the window so easily - my guess is that you can only hide native Win32 applications. But if this is a console application, then maybe it's not possible - or maybe you just need a more complicated API. I would ask on codeguru.com - they usually know a lot about windows APIs.

If you happen to be using a Linux environment, bash is your command shell and it is telling you it doesn't know how to interpret the command you issued. Check the path to the directory and the existence of the file or link, if you are indeed using Linux of some flavor. I hope this will help you find your problem.

I hear you can compile with SDCC using code::blocks, which is a popular IDE for C and C++ development. It comes with the GCC/MinGW compiler for Windows development. If you're a minimalist who doesn't like the idea of auto-completion, syntax highlighting and all those fancy drop-downs, then you might prefer to use a normal text editor and use SDCC from the command line.

Okay I am going to be honest here I just started learning Java and truthfully I prefer C++ way more! The first thing I really don't like about java is the fact that it is so damn strict especially the case sensetive thing! oi.. I dunno I always heard that it is so much easier, but idunno there seems to be a LOT more you have to remember in order to get things up and running then when I was doing C++.. I am like constently having to refer to my java so I know what memeber functions are apart of what class.. usually in C++ when you create classes it shows you all the members of yoru class. Also they change the names.. they refer to functions as methods and constants as finals? Idunno, perhaps I just need to give it some time, then I will see the advantages to it over C++. But so far I am favoring C++.

I would have to say the only thing I like about java so far is the ease of gui development.

Reply:Java is pretty sloppy, I dont see why everyone lilkes it. I believe C++ is easier to learn as well. Java has a lot of classes and include things you need to learn and very specific includes. With C++ you can include IOSTEAM.h and get going. JAVA is also very slow and needs a garbage collector.

Reply:I studied C++ in my school for 2 years, this was not object-oriented programming but just basics and functions etc. Later I started learning classes in java for 2 months and at the same time object-oriented programming in Java.

I personally think, once you learn the keywords of java, you will find it much more easier to use.

Java is fully object oriented and not C++.

Java has Automatic garbage collector so you don't have to worry about memory leak. You don't need to create a desctructor to destroy the dynamic variables.

In java, you don't need a separate header file as in C++. In java you can create the interface using javadoc which is million times better if you compare with C++ header file.

Try using Java for at least 15 days and I am sure you will definitely go for java.
Reply:C++ is a much better language IMO. Not only does it have the advantage of being faster by tenfold, but it doesn't need a framework installed on the client machine to run. The downside being that each platform you develop for may need different code.

That's the upside to Java...the same code runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux (with obvious limitations) with less modification.

As far as showing the members of your class, that sounds like the IDE as opposed to the language. Though I've never developed with either language, all the other languages I've used have various development environments with different features...perhaps you should look for a better Java IDE.

Sorry that this may be a double question but I need to do some point conservation here :)

Question 1: I'm going to get a mac very soon and I was start doing some C++ stuff on it. I don't know very much about the land of programming but I've done simple python, basic, stuff... Anyway, how would you get started programming on a mac? I would love to work with xcode but I don't know if that's too complicated for the stuff I'm going to do in the very beginning (c++ fundamentals).

And question 2: What would you recommend on learning how to work with xcode once I learn how to do the simple stuff? Like how to work with the gui (everything beyond terminal is what I'm trying to say).

I don't own a Mac, but since Mac OS X is based off of BSD Unix. It should come with python, c/c++ (compliments of GCC), and some other languages installed. I do know there is a bash terminal installed, so you can use a text editor and use g++ to compile programs. Learning this way would allow you to use g++ on any platform that supports it, such as Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, etc.

You could also use this to do GUI programming. Since I am not familiar with Mac GUI programming or Xcode, I can't help you any futher than to say you could use Qt by Trolltech, which is a cross-platform API that will work on Mac, Windows, or Linux.

XCode is just an IDE for GCC and G++, so you might as well start there.

The Vistal express editions are somewhat limited in power but at your level you will never notice.

The only thing that you get for money is a much much better IDE and more files as well as a CD with a complete MSDN cd.

If you mean attach C# addons and such with 3ds max, sure. There is software written out there in C# that has been successfully attached to 3DS max stuff... basically for importing and exporting. How you go about doing it is up to me though. I haven't played around with 3DS max.

I am a beginner c++ programmer. Only have been working in console mode but would like to move onto win32 or win64 apllications and eventually games. When i search on the net for C++ tutorials i get terms like sdl, msdn. api and i have know idea what they mean. Also i downloaded a sdl library for dev-c++ and linked it. is the sdl library a standerd or are there other versions. does it work with opengl or directx. If possible i don't want to program using the .net framework. It's a ok for nissness applications but not games because you need mor control over the GUI. I don't know where to start when it comes to win32 programming? any help would be appreciated?

Well, its good that you want to enter the complex world of graphics programing. Welcome to real business :)

To start you first need to brush your skills with drawing simple graphics and moving them around the screen. You can start with simple things first, say pure C in a DOS based environment and create simple graphics, move them around and create complex shapes with simple objects like rectangles and polygons.

When you get a good grip on that you can start using the win32 model. For that you can get some books first, on Windows graphics API. MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) is a good resource for getting most information about Microsoft platforms. No need to get into .NET if you feel you dont need it.

The topic of graphics programing is rather complex to be discussed here but there are plenty of books in the market to get you going...

How do I utilize a dll in my new Windows Form Application.

I am using Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition.

I have the following code attached to a button:

I expect this but don't know how to resolve it. I have a DLL called mycode.dll with a namespace called MySEAjov and a procedure named proc1.

How do I clue the Forms Application in to the fact that the namespace and proc are from a DLL.

Add the lib file to your project. VC will understand that you want to link with it.

Include the header file for your DLL. Depending on how you organise your source files you might have to specifiy the whole path for the header, like this -

#include "C:/code/foobar.h"

or a relative path might be easier.

The biggest problem is that you can only export functions from a DLL, not namespaces. You'd need to write a function called MySEAjov_proc1 with _declspec(dllexport) attributes.

Be careful about C++ function name decoration. There is a tool (in the VC98\Bin directory of your developer studio install) called 'dumpbin'. This allows you to look at the exports from a DLL (and many other things too).

You still have to follow C++ rules, regardless of what DLL or library form you use. If you don't have the namespaces, datatypes, functions, whatever declared, usually in the header file for the DLL, you can't compile.

Cross-platform standard GUIs are AWT, JFC/Swing, Tcl/Tk, GTK+, QT; the first two I know for sure are for Java, Tcl/Tk binding on Windows maybe only for Python and Perl, JFC/Swing is as complete as anyone ever saw and equally good for visual or manual coding. GUI on Windows using Microsoft's way is gotta be visually, then applying some programming hooks in its IDE products. I think the same is happening with Borland's products for Windows, this applies to any language including C++.

Try Borland Builder, it is quite similar to program Windows C++ programs.

Another good point to start is the Teach yourself Visual C++ in 21 Days. It is very well explained and a good point to start.

The thing with MS Visual C++ is that the programming will be abit different. It will remain the same about syntax and programming rules. But for information transactions between your programs and your user interface it will be slightly different from those of console-like.

How do I make the Visual Basic 6 GUI remain responsive during a DLL call?

My employer will not spend the money to get me Visual Basic.Net. I am stuck using Visual Basic 6. I am pretty good with programming embedded C, but have no time to learn to program in Visual C++.

So I am doing some advanced programming, in VB6, using several DLL’s. I have 4 DLL’s, and two of them use callbacks. The problem is the GUI will appear to freeze during a DLL call. When the DLL returns, everything returns to normal. I have partly cured the problem by refreshing the forms, and calling DoEvents during callbacks. This works fine, unless the user clicks on a control button. The button event will not fire until the DLL returns, or during the callback. This makes the app very sluggish.

I have tried various methods of multi-tasking. Several of them work, in the IDE, but crash at runtime. The app will crash with an exception when one of the DLL’s executes a callback.

How do I make the Visual Basic 6 GUI remain responsive during a DLL call?
Not easy to follow everything you did, but I'd try something like this:

Make a worker thread that does the DLL calls. Keep or drop the callbacks. I guess you are using callbacks to signalize progress, if so you will have trouble - VB6 is too slow for that. If you're using callbacks for other things, it may be worth reconsidering them, I don't have good experience with callbacks in VB6.

The worker thread should send simple Windows Messages to signalize progress. Even in VB6 you can post/send Windows Messages.

The User Interface thread is the main VB thread, no modifications needed. To Windows Messages are trapped by subclassing some (main) window - good source code can be found for that on Internet. This read will be responsive all the time, and no risk of crashing.

I have a book that is based on visual C++ 2003 (version 7.1).

If i download and install visual c++ 2008 edition from Microsoft, can i still be taught by that books while using the newer version of visual c++ or are there some core differences between the options and GUI ?

yes you can. they have almost the same user interface so you dont have to worry. they basically have the same function and does the same. the 2008 version has more function to make programming simpler. it will help you along the way and the book will be fine.

I'm trying to write a GUI Java guessing game with the user. The user enters a number between 1-10 OR letters between A-K (uppercase). The user is suppose to have a choice, This program is suppose to generate a random number in the same range OR a letter to compare to the user’s input and declare whether you have matched each other or not.

1. Isn't this suppose to be a GUI program?

2. You imported the Random class, yet you aren't using it.

i. If I'm correct, you can specify a range of possible values when using random.

ii. You can then convert the integer, ASCII value to a character or vice versa to do a comparison.

The amount of code required should be minimal.

1. Prompt for input

2. Check that the input falls within 1-10, or A-K

3. Once you know where it falls, randomly pic a value in that range (specify range to random object created from the Random class)

4. Cast randomly selected value to char and compare to input

You don't need to use the Math class.

netbeans can be used to make a Java GUI.. But, once you have created the GUI, you will need to add event listeners to make things work the way you want.

In the JTextField, you can add an ActionListener which will be called once an ActionEvent is generated. In the actionPerformed method you can capture the event and then access teh other JTextfield you are interested in.

GUI and Graphics - how to learn to program?

I started in computers back in the 70's, but haven't kept up with the newer things, I am now trying to catch up. I have been mostly programming for working with data, now I want to learn how to do graphics in a Windows environment. I have tried some C++ and Java, only to hit roadblocks because I don't know how to find the right libraries / compilers.

I want to write a program that has a GUI driven window that reads data coordinates to draw special maps, then have the option to print or save the maps. I have done the map drawing in an old version of BASIC, but this can't read mouse coordinates and only has 16 colors..

Can someone please recommend a path that will teach me how to learn how to do this in a newer language? What product can I buy or files to download that has all the needed libraries, compilers etc to make the program work in WIN XP?

I am not near a university, the small local college has no answer for me. Such is small town Kansas.

GUI and Graphics - how to learn to program?
So many options, the most basic language for creating GUI's is a RAD (Rapid Application Development) language, such as Visual Basic or Delphi. I personally favour QT http://www.trolltech.com with C++, the GUI toolkit is very powerful and interoperable. Though if you're not friendly with C++, it might be a tad tricky to pick up.

For windows, you can use the Win32 API with most languages, I hate to suggest it, but if you're familiar with Basic, then I suggest picking up a copy of Visual Basic, http://msdn.microsoft.com should contain all you need to know.
Reply:You can use C++ or Java for this. I personally would recommend Java for starting out. I think the way it's graphics work are much more intuitive, although C++ and MFC (graphics libraries) get used a whole lot more in the production world.

Netbeans has a GUI wizard you can use to make your app and then just flesh out the code if you like.

If you prefer to roll your own, the libraries you will need to use are the javax.swing.* classes.

I would recommend that you start by getting a JFrame on the screen. I would then probably use BorderLayout on the Container inside JFrame and add a JPanel in the center to draw on. You will need to override the paintComponent method to do your custom drawing. All this will make sense as you look at the tutorial...

From there you can create another custom JPanel on the in the Left portion of the screen where you can add your JTextFields and JButtons for data entry. You will then need to add some event handlers to your GUI so that you can submit data. Look at java.awt.event.ActionEvent for this.

Hi , my next project at school is an inventory database system. I am however choosing if I should use visual c# or java. The database systems requires tons of GUI , action listeners and connection from the application to the SQL tables.

1) Being a language that is closer to the hardware, C, is a much more powerful language than Java. As such, you can usually code the same algorithms in C more efficiently than in Java. Java is platform independent, so doing platform specific things isn't all that great in Java, where as C is probably the dominant platform specific language (though it still has the ability to be cross platform if used correctly).

2) Yes, it's called Java Native Interface (JNI). It allows things outside of the JVM to be called and make calls to Java programs.

3) Not sure about this, but if you're using java, you may want to look into Java (Java Media Framework). It can be used for audio/video playback and capture.

Where do you begin in GUI programming? I already know quite a bit of C++ , but have only made console type applications. Would learning another language such as VB be easier in rapidly developing simple GUI applications for Windows XP/Vista? Also, does Linux (GNOME/KDE) GUI programming have as steep of a learning curve?

What's the easiest way to learn GUI programming?
I had a fun time with Java and Python in GUI programming. Java's Net Beans (which you can download from http://www.netbeans.org/products/index.h... ) is pretty easy to learn, especially if you have experience with Java. There are a couple of ways to build GUIs in Python... but nothing as rapid as VB. VB would be easier in developing simple GUI applications for Windoze, but since you have a lot of experience with C++... why not start there and then go into VB.

Linux GUI programming does not have a steep learning curve. It's only the familiarity with Linux that you'll have trouble with.

Reply:VB is a good place to start. You'll find if you use C++ that you'll do the same things, only write more code to do it. The best way to learn is pick a GUI system that you want to work with (like Windows), pick a language and just do it. Since you know C++, you might get more mileage out of C#, the syntax is practically identical.

It is not an "event" it is a method that you call, that is why it is not listed. I call it on the MouseDown event. You will have to fill in the parameters (a) what data you are dragging and (b) what type of drag you are doing (move, copy).

The control you desire to drop upon must have the property "AllowDrop" set to true.

When the user drops the data, the "event" DragDrop will fire.

Does anyone know any good books for coding on Windows in C++? That is, creation of a window, adding elements of GUI etc. I am quite good at C++, so I don't need an intro on it.

Keep in mind that the Win32 API is based on C, so no classes are available. A very good C++ wrapper from Microsoft are the MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes). The standard text book on those is "Programming Windows With MFC" by Jeff Prosise.

Now with all this being said, keep in mind that Microsoft is really pushing C# and their .NET class framework. Unless you are loooking for high performance / small footprint applications or driver development, it is probably going to be easier to do C# / .NET development instead because of more available resources.

Okay I am was just wondering if it would be possible to use java as the front end and C++ as the back end. Like use java for the GUI aspects of the application while using C++ to do any type of intense coding that may need to be done. My work profile is more related to software testing than programming.

Now I m about to make a move towards programming and development, but confused which way to go........

currently the product i m working in is implemented in C++ with RH9 and JAVA for the GUI and core JAVA.

You can go for either of them it won't matter too much in the log term which language you select.

But what will matter is how you build upon the base language.

Look in Software Industry these languages just act in the background ...more important consideration is to get familiar and skilled in various frameworks and APIs which theyencompass, only this will create weight on your resume and value for the client.

If you select Java then you must get yourself familiar with following:

JSP, Servlets, Frameworks like STRUTS, Velocity, Spring, OR tools like Hibernate,various XML APIs etc...

Then you can go into details and master one or the other depending upon whether your intrest lies in one or the other..front end or back end, web apps or desktop apps

However i can't find a way to do this without a gui and then still it only works when it has focus. Any suggestions?

How to call a list from a button on a GUI?

Basically I want to make a very simple GUI, I have folders named a,b,c,d etc...

And I want to make a Button for each letter, and when pressed I would like it to bring up the contents of that folder maybe in a box of some sort on the GUI but I am not 100% sure how this works.

And the last part would be after the GUI shows the contents of that folder I would want a certain program to open the file when selected.

I know how to design the GUI but I don't know the code to do the above mentioned or what type of box or whatever I need to display the folder.

Using Microsoft Visual studio, with Visual Basic as a Language.

If you cant help can you link me to a really good programming forum where I could pose this question.

It has been a long time since I've programmed in Visual Basic, but I found some sample code on the web. As for the display, I'd probably put it in a ListView, which is the same view you see in Windows Explorer.

I want to write a fast, efficient GUI application but I'm confused as to which language I should learn. I did some research but couldn't come to a conclusion.

* Java - performance too slow, takes up much memory

* wxWidgets - corss-platform is nice, and it is relatively fast and efficient but knowing this language won't get me a decent job as it's rarely used out there

* WTL - very fast but it's an open source that is seldom updated.. and is used very little in real life. Like wxWidgets I am not excited about learning it if it's of little value to put on my resume

* C++/CLI or C# (or any .NET language for that matter) - GUI performance is crappy just like java

* MFC - I would've used it if it is not being obsoleted by MS. What's the point of learning a soon-to-be-dead language?

* Qt - slow like java and .NET because it does not use native controls. The GUI even looks non-native and non-professional

I can't believe there's lack of an obvious choice in 2007? Common!

You are mixing up laguages and libraries / frameworks.

Java / C++ / C# are languages.

wxWidgets / Qt / WTL are platform independent libraries (partly for Java and C++)

It depends on your target platform and on your knowledge.

Target platform only windows:

I would use C++.NET or C#.NET. It provides the best Windows integration and performance. I don't know why you think that .NET programs have a slow GUI. I cannot confirm.

Target Platform Windows / Linux/....

I yould use a platform independent library like Qt or wxWidgets. Ot is the base for KDE desktop.

Java 6 has very good interfaces and it's almost near to native windows GUI.

I cannot agree with your statement that in 07 is a lack of choice.

I'm a beginner at using Visual C++ or C++ actually. I am to do a GUI for a project using Visual C++ and I heard that there are 2 ways to do it: MFC and CLR. You could start with MFC, which is very easy.

MFC is a framework, in other words, a group of functions, definitions methods and objects that allow you to use the windows api easily.

CLR is run time execution environment for .Net, It provides runtime as well as compile time services. e.g Memory Management, debuging CLR works with the CLS (Common Language Specification) and CTS (Common Type Systems) to ensure language interoperability.

I read everywhere that i should learn Python but i am not interested in it anymore because i see all the programs written with python are scripts to be used in a CLI.

Im neither interested in Visual Basic, as any good programmer says it sucks and better stay away.

Any language with GUI bindings qualifies. C, C++, C#, VB.NET, Java, Python, TCL, and so on have bindings.

You can start with C++. Just get a good book. Two mistakes you can make with C++ is starting with a bad resource or book. And believe me, there's countless "experts" who not only write bad code but teach it too. The other mistake is to jump into windows programming with C++...without knowing C++ fully.

Go to http://www.accu.org . They have book reviews that check for technical accuracy. Basically, there's two books I think that are really good for learning C++: Lippman's C++ Primer and Koenig's Accelerated C++. They are both written by experts who know what they are talking about.

Or you can make GUI programs with it if you want. It's not any different when you first start with another programming language you know? You'll start with CLI programs because windows programming requires you to have competent knowledge in your programming language.

By "GUI Code", I think you mean Integrated Development Environment or IDE. There are a bunch, I believe even javabeans has an option to compile C++, a websearch for C++ IDE should turn up alot of results for you.

Look, that is a general question. You can even get a good answer in almost any good college catalog. C as a language evolved during an important transitional period in the development of computers, and while -- technically -- Unix started first, it was almost immediately written in C.

Why? Programming is a branch of applied mathematics. In essence this means we are almost always abstracting from the properties of our machines to find ways to get them to do what we want them to. C is precisely a great language for System programming, embedded programming and graphics and other drivers because if a device is controlled by switches (as most are) it is one of the most straightforward for creating a logical model of any device which will send it the commands that make it work while providing an interface which we can understand.

The above poster recommended Visual C++ and OpenGL. Since I'm on Linux I'm not going to recommend Visual C++ but will recommend OpenGL. On the other hand, I don't see what that has to do with the topic beyond being examples of them. Visual C++ is optimized for the Microsoft Windows system. If you are writing for the Microsoft Windows Operating System there is no reason not to take advantage of the Visual C++ libraries. However Borland's products, Bloodshed Software's DevC++ and Digital Mars's C/C++ compiler also have Windows libraries which are perfectly good (and more secure because they use fewer undocumented features). OpenGL is implemented across most x86-based OSes and provides great hardware access. Using their libraries is a real blessing. I've linked to a site which hosts openGL tutorials in sources. Both are examples of many tools which have been created using C and C++ for the reasons I stated in the beginning.

You might also check out a prototyping language called tk/tcl which came out of Unix but provides a quick method of creating GUI-based applications across several platforms. Once you understand the concepts you will be better able to research and use the libraries which are best for you or, alternatively to learn what you need to do to write them.

Use Java, though PHP probably takes the fewest lines of code to interface with MySQL, if you are going to build a large, enterprise application, Java will ultimately be a better choice. If you're just doing something simple for yourself - PHP. Unless you want a desktop client (non-web) - then Java.

I gave my students the "Game of Life" by John Conroy - I've written in in C, C++, and Java.

Briefly, it shows how organisms live and die from one generation to the next. I offered 100 points for the base program, an additional 25 points if you stopped the generation count if they all died, an additional 25 points if you stopped the generation count if each generation was the same (stability), and the last 50 points if you stopped the generations when they flip-flopped (every other generation looked the same).

It's fun, challenging, and a lot of students loved it!

C++ is "old" and is "not typed" (you can apply, for example, a pointer to an integer to point at a character string). Also, it's class/inheritance/polymorphism/OO support is an afterthought, not like C# or Java. I wrote C++ years ago before OO was around.

Anyway, no arguement that C++ code runs faster - but with hardware today, I'd opt for a language that's easier to write.

My suggestion - all things being equal - if you are a dyed-in-the-wool-Microsoft shop, go with C#. If not, go with Java.

Forget the slow GUI in Java

Watch out for the garbage collection or memory leak in C++

C# takes care of both.

Reply:Go with C++. It can be VERY eaisly ported from system to system, its very fast and efficiant, and it has more support online than physically comprehendable. Not only that, but companies always need good C++ programmers. C++ was used to create Linux, used in open source projects, and used to make many video games on all types of systems. Note-C++ is a litte difficult to learn, but not much harder than any of the other ones.

Alright, we all know how to program that 'Hello World' in console, that cout or printf command and boom.

So how do we actually input that 'Hello World' in a command in Visual C++ using the GUI that when you input a command button (drag the command button in the toolbox that has it) it will display the message box when you click it?

The actual command is something along the lines of either

MessageBox( 0, "Hello World." );

or

MessageBox( "Hello World." );

depending on where the call is being made from.

That being said, getting to the point of making and successfully compiling that call requires a totally different compilation mode from Console. MFC or .Net is required.

Reply:first of all, you need to create a Win32 project with a WinMain() function instead of a normal main() function.

Then you can define a dialog in the resource section (i.e. with the dialog designer of visual studio). You can load this dialog as a main window. You will also need a message loop, otherwise you can't react to windows messages, which are sent i.e. when a button is pressed or the window is closed.

you see, it's a bit complicated. There's a good book of Charles Petzold about Windows API programming, maybe you find a cheap copy. And codeguru.com has some articles and tutorials.

Reply:I own "All in One" written by a guy named "de Sousa." I haven't gotten around to reading it, but you must own Visual C++ ver. 6.0 or higher, and the software is extremely costly.

Visual C++ from microsoft might provide an actual RAD tool to allow you to drag/drop widgets and get the C++ code.

Finally, you can use any third-party windoing library like qt or wxwindows from your C++ code -- you just have to write the code!

Here's the deal. On a 1 to 10 scale where 1 is the easiest and 10 is the hardest, doing GUI's with C++ stands at 7 ~ 9 depending on your prior programming abilities. If you are using Microsoft Visual C++ as the IDE, I'd recommend you use the Visual Studio Wizard to create a sample MFC GUI program and see how it is being done. MFC is Microsoft's framework for rapid application development that include GUIs. But keep in mind, without any fancy framework or foundation class, you can still write GUIs for Windows by only using raw C++. This is knows as using the API which is even harder and time consuming compared to using something like MFC.

I'm a computer engineering student and I'm still trying to master the basics of C++. I just started learning about classes and memory management and arrays. In my book those are the last few topics. There are further topics on online tutorials and such and I plan to move on to Java next.

I've been doing Software Engineering for twenty plus years. Here's what I think:

C++ may be the most complex language you'll learn. You will need to learn a lot of the supporting libraries as mentioned by OOP's. PERL, Python and PHP are scripting languages and you can learn them as you need them. I think Java is important to learn, it is a delightful and useful language. The syntax is similar to C++.

The web based languages (HTML, Javascript) are worth learning if you plan to do a lot of internet stuff.

XML is useful and easy. In many situations.

I have to say that once you have C++ under your belt other languages come pretty easy. They all have loops conditions and variables, many support object oriented programming. I have never learned PERL, Python or PHP to any degree, but can figure out how to use them when there is a particular need. I've used all three at one time or another.

Visual Basic is just a shell, so to speak, over the DotNet CLR. So, it is no more useful than Java#, C# or managed C++. And since you will know C++, C# and managed C++ are a matter of learning their DotNet quirks.

Mostly, as a software engineer, you will come to a job and have to learn the application and particular libraries the employer is interested in. So you may have to learn a new language on the fly. But you should understand basic data structures and algorithms. Also math through linear algebra is important. And most importantly, as a software engineer, you need to understand how to solve problems. Then languages are just tools to solve them.
Reply:Well, if you manage to learn C++ properly, you should learn the most useful libraries for it, as C++ is probably the most powerful language available. (Well maybe C is better for drivers..meh).

Win32 API -Allows you to make GUI using C++ on Windows,

lets you handle processes, threads, user input, make video game cheats..loads of stuff

Winsock - Lets you make networked programs

Direct3D - Lets you make 3D programs.

Fmod - Sound library used by many professional game designers

Various other useful ones like zlib, libpng, etc..

Of course, this depends on what you want to do with your programming. I also suggest you learn Perl, as it's a good language with which to quickly develop small utilities and text handling / administration programs. If you get into web design, you should learn Flash, Javascript, SQL, and PHP.

I advice against learning Java unless you must, since it sucks. (C++ is wayy better, although not as portable.) A computer engineer should know C,MIPS, and x86 assembly. These are relatively low level and are what engineers often have to deal with. (The ones you listed are high level and are used mainly for Web development.) The most popular languages are C/C++, C#, and Java.

C# is also good for rapid development, but the user must have .net framework installed...so that might reduce the portability of your programs. I would suggest you learn C# instead of Java because it's portable on all machines with .net installed (Like java needs the Java virtual machine installed) but is much faster and simpler, but just as powerful. Good luck.

Note: Idk where you plan on learning your programming, but I'd like to let you know I have learned all of these except PHP and SQL through the sole use of Google.

It's not that much different from C++. It doesn't use pointers though. It uses references. It is very similar to Java. But, it is also similar to C++. You should easily be able to learn it. And, there are plenty of books available.

Reply:Yes, I can because I am good like that. Ok, first thing first. C# is closer to the structure and style of Java, but closer syntactically to C++. With that said, since you are developing a game with C# for the 360 you are probably using the XNA framework. If you know 3D with C++, you will be happy to the know that while syntax may be slightly different, 3D is 3D. You can find more out about XNA here: http://creators.xna.com/

The major difference is that C# is completely object-oriented and while C# supports pointers there is really no need to use them in regular programming. The reason is C# supports garbage collection. It is important to understand how this works in game programming, so as to not to take performance penalties by a garbage collection occurring at a bad time. The other important thing to understand is that most things in C# are objects. There is a lot to explain as far as XNA and C#.

I will recommend two books.

For C#:

Depends on which platform you want to target. In Linux/KDE I would suggest Qt. On Windows you can use the Win32 API for your GUI. You can also use GTK which is available for both Windows and Linux. There are many other cross platform GUI toolkits available.

If your's is a graphically intensive program, I would suggest using OpenGL or DirectX for rendering. OpenGL is supported on Linux as well.

OK, let me spew my opinion.

Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates. He wrote an implementation of the BASIC language. I don't know if you remenber writing code like

10 go sub 100: for x = 1 to y: go sub 300:next x

Bill gates was language and development centric.

Now Bill is stepping down/aside. Business analysts look at the numbers and see that Windows and Office is their biggest money maker. Languages such as VB or VC probably brought in less than 1% of their revenue. Linux and open source came into the picture and there IS a definate alternate to windows for servers. The cost to get into developing is an issue as to the platform that developers will develop to. If it costs money to get the tools to develop for one platform, and it costs no money to develop for another platform, there will be more developers developing for the platform that it does not cost any money to start developing in. Developers are the people that specify the target platform that the system will run on. If the developers pick Linux as the target system, that is what they will sell to the end users. I am sure that Microsoft wants the developers to pick Windows.

The next big trend for applications is to be web enabled, or just be a web based apllication. The interface to allow links to every other system in the world is just too efficient to use.

So Microsoft needs to not loose their market to the Linux/Apache/MySQL server market which costs no money for developers to get into. How do they do it?

Microsoft takes their development software and makes it free just like Linux/gcc/Apache/Perl/Php/..... They want to sell Operating Systems for all of those servers. They have made the development environment so advanced that NOTHING compares. They have billions to spend in research and development, and they have spent their money well. They have also developed the .NET framework that is designed to best-of-practice standards.

Sun has developed java and its virtual machine. It is too strictly licensed and controlled by Sun for it to eventually win out.

The .NET framwork is simular to java, but it compiles into psuedo code when developed, and compliles into executable code on the target machine when it is installed and run for the first time. This allows the compiler on the target machine to look at the system and add all of the compiler options specific to the CPU on the production machine.

So forget the Linux/Unix -vs- Windows wars, I am a Unix/Linux die hard. I have come to the realization that the new tools from microsoft are just too good to ignore.

Microsoft does not want to loose the Operating System market. It also does not want to loose the Office sales. To protect those sales, it is giving away the development environments (which probably amount to less then 1% of their total sales) to ensure that developers will devlop targeting Windows. The cost of Windows can just be added to the total cost of the project, which is paid for by the customer.

Windows is less complicated to manage for the average person than a Unix/Linux based OS. Unix/Linux systems may be more efficient, but CPUs have become so fast that it is almost not even an issue anymore. Especially if the software on the Unix/Linux based system is running in java (as in java server pages), and the software on the Windows environment is based on .NET.

like playing with system calls that disregard any thing and do absolutly what you tell them to... then choose C. that requires complex understanding of how system works. its like.. knowing the internals of a Car engine.

JAVA is hot right now... every one claims to knoe JAVA, but very few are actually good at it. you need to find one domain within JAVA which you like and then get into it. its like.. making different components of a car work together.

It really depends on what platform you are coding on and whether or not it is important for your program to run on multiple platforms.

Almost all GUI packages provide some kind of "designer" program to take the grunt work out of actually creating the GUI and most of the code is generated for you. This reduces your coding to implementing what is appropriate for the various GUI events. You only need to code by hand (use the APIs) if you need to do something outside the capabilities of the designer program itself.
